People in County Durham are being reminded that they need to be registered to vote if they wish to have their say in the forthcoming European election.

The European Parliamentary election is taking place on Thursday, 23 May.

Polling cards will be delivered to County Durham residents who are eligible to vote and are registered to do so from today (Friday, April 26) to Monday, 29 April. These will have details of allocated polling stations.

Anyone who is not registered to vote can do so online up until Tuesday, 7 May at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Anyone who has recently moved home and has not informed Durham County Council’s electoral services team can also register their new address online by Tuesday, 7 May at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

European Union (EU) citizens living in County Durham who are not from the UK can choose to vote in either their home country or here. Those wanting to vote in the UK must be registered and can do so online by Tuesday, 7 May at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Non-UK EU citizens must also send a completed European Parliament voter registration form to electoral services by Tuesday, 7 May.

A letter, containing the form and information on how to return it, has been posted to all non-UK EU citizens who are registered to vote in the county.

Anyone wanting to check whether they are registered can phone electoral services on 03000 261 212.

Anyone eligible to vote and registered to do so can request a postal or proxy vote.

The deadline to sign up for postal votes is 5pm on Wednesday, 8 May and for proxy votes is 5pm on Wednesday, 15 May.
