Veteran William Cooksey completed his 100 mile walking challenge on Monday 6th September having walked 10 miles a day for 10 days in a run. William walked from Aycliffe Train Station to Shildon Train Station along the old railway line route.
To welcome him over the finish line were members of Five Acres Community Garden as well as BBC Look North and members of the County Durham & Darlington NHS Trust Foundation, the charity which William was raising funds for.
In attendance from the Trust were Paul Keane (OBE), Jenny Flynn (Chair) and Pat Chambers (Manager) as well as Richard Tucker (MBE), the North East Ambassador for the Armed Forces.
A group of local cyclists, about to head off along the same route, also gave their applause and congratulations to William as he crossed the line.
Paul Keane, said: “10 miles a day for 10 days is a mighty challenge for anyone of any age, but, at 100 years old William has shown true guts and determination to achieve his goal. It is truly fabulous and we’re overjoyed that William choose to support his local NHS charity County Durham & Darlington, thank you so much”.
William became overwhelmed and emotional as the party then moved to ROF59, where a reception awaited. Those in attendance then welcomed the guest visitor, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of County Durham, Sue Snowdon who added her good wishes to William.
At the time of going to print the total raised was over £3000.
