A day of footballing family fun is being organised in aid of the appeal to extend the chemotherapy day unit at University Hospital of North Durham.

Philippa Parsons, charity support officer, at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, explains, “We’re inviting teams of under 7’s to take part in our five-a-side fun tournament at Soccarena, in Belmont, Durham on Sunday 4th August, from 9.30am to 1.30pm. There will be four reduced size pitches, and teams will play each other in a mini league, culminating in semi-final, then final matches – with the winning and runner-up teams receiving a trophy. Teams who already play together are welcome but so are teams getting together for the first time.

“Entry is £40 per team which is great value for an action-packed morning. We’re also able to offer reduced rate entry for 4th August only, to Infinite Air Trampoline Park on the day.”

“At 1.30pm a friendly match between the Durham Constabulary Football Team and members of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, will kick off – participants in the family fun event and their families are welcome to stay for that and make a day of it. It’s all in a good cause – our appeal to raise money to extend the chemotherapy day unit at University Hospital of North Durham. The treatments now available plus early diagnosis have resulted in unprecedented demand on the unit. The new unit will be much more spacious, offering patients the privacy and dignity they need to help them through their treatment.”

“We’re enormously grateful to Austin Carney, Managing Director of infinite Durham, for his generosity in support of our appeal by offering us the Soccarena facilities for the day. It should be great fun!”

Commenting, Austin Carney, said, “We’re delighted to support County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust in their campaign to fight Cancer. We hope that making the Soccarena (New Ferens Park, Durham) facilities available on 4th August raises both awareness and substantial funds.

“Like many people my family has experienced Cancer, my sister Wendy started her journey at the University of North Durham Hospital, and to help in any small way in establishing a centre of “Excellence in cancer care” would mean a lot to us.”

Mike Renshaw from Durham Constabulary, said, “Durham Constabulary Football Club is delighted to be offered the chance to compete in a charity football match against a select NHS team. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams. We are raising money for an excellent charity with all the proceeds going towards the Chemotherapy Appeal at University of North Durham Hospital. We’re looking forward to a full day of football, both for children and adults that the whole family can enjoy. It promises to be a great day.”
