Sunday was a momentous occasion not only for two individual torch bearers but for Woodham Community Technology College as well. Two representatives from Woodham were chosen to carry the Olympic Torch as it passed through the region.
Year 10 student Richie Howe and assistant head teacher Jon Tait carried the torch sharing a priceless moment in history.
Richie, 15, carried the torch through Darlington town centre. He was nominated for his charity work for Diabetes UK where he raised hundreds of pounds swimming the equivalent length of the English Channel in the Leisure Centre Pool.
Jon took up the torch in Stockton, having been nominated for work with the Woodham Warriors American Football team and the Coach USA programme at Woodham.
Richie said “The experience was incredible. Having all those people shouting and cheering for me was amazing. I still can’t believe that it’s happened. It’s something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life”.
Jon commented “To get this opportunity is truly fantastic. I will never forget this day. To be also carrying the torch on Father’s Day in front of my own children has been very emotional”.
Jon and Richie are taking the torch into the local community for the next fortnight, trying to spread the happiness amongst children and adults alike in primary schools, youth clubs and community centres.
Anyone interested in receiving a visit from Jon and Richie with the torch should contact the main office on 300328.
