Construction work is nearing completion on a new housing development being built on the former Visqueen plastics factory site in Stockton.

Bellway is building 474 new homes at its Queensgate development off Yarm Road, which is set to be completed this summer.

It will mark the culmination of a decade-long transformation of the derelict site, which became vacant following the closure of the plastics plant in 2009.

Planning permission for the homes was granted later the same year, with demolition work getting underway on site in 2010.

The development includes a range of two, three and four-bedroom houses and apartments built around a village green. Forty eight of the homes have been provided as affordable housing for rent or shared ownership.

As part of the planning agreement for Queensgate, Bellway is providing more than £1 million towards local services and infrastructure. This includes £530,000 for school places, £346,000 towards off-site sports facilities and £170,000 for on and off-site play provision.

A total of 450 homes have now been built on the site, and there are now just 10 properties remaining for sale.

Darren Pelusi, Sales Manager for Bellway Durham, said: “Over the past 10 years, this derelict former factory site has been completely transformed into a thriving and attractive new neighbourhood which is delivering much-needed new homes for the area.

“The site’s convenient location, just two miles from Stockton town centre, has made it popular with a wide range of buyers and we’re pleased to say that the development is now almost sold out.

“We’re looking forward to completing construction work later this year and welcoming the final few residents into their homes.”

A selection of three and four-bedroom homes are currently available to purchase at Queensgate, with prices starting from £153,995.
