Throughout summer, the Church of England has been encouraging churches to take part in #stainedglasssummer – to share the beauty and story of windows with the community. We needed no further inspiration than the amazing windows within the Parish Church of St. Clare’s.
So we held our first Stained Glass Window Workshop with 15 young people, members of the local art group and any who passed by interested in what was taking place. After sharing the story of the windows within the church we had the opportunity to design our own windows – taking inspiration from our own stories, what we like, what we are proud of and what we would like to see.
What wonderful imagery was produced – drawings ranging from the story of Noah’s Ark to Peppa Pig! We had colourful dragons, under the sea art and drawings depicting the 75 year anniversary of the town. Such creative young people with great imaginations!
This was followed by a delicious lunch which we all were ready for and enjoyed.
Fuelled from lunch, stained glass artist Helen Gordon led a wonderful workshop, detailing the history of the glass and how everything is put together. We had the opportunity to work with glass confetti and other components to create our own designs carefully guided by Helen’s expertise. These have them being transported carefully back to Helen’s studio to be fired and will be returned and in place for all to see on Sunday 3rd September, where all are welcome to join us for the 10.00am service.
Such great fun and fellowship which we hope to repeat.
Heartfelt thanks for all who helped put the day together, for feeding us so well and for the funding (Diocese micro mission grant funding and Communities Together Durham) which enabled this to happen.
