Sedgefield Water Polo Club entered the outdoor Manup water polo festival which took place in the Salford Quay’s Media Centre Manchester on a very cold and wet Saturday afternoon on 7th August.
A Manup match consists of a team of 8 players with 6 in the water from each team including a goalkeeper and 2 subs, in a short circuit beach style setup with a rolling clock and no centre restarts after a goal, which makes it a non-stop fast paced exciting game
Sedgefield won all their matches in their group stage 8-0, 5-2, 7-2, 4-3, to put them into the final against a very good Rotherham team. This was a great game with some skilful goals and a very good penalty save by our goalkeeper Richard during the game, helping towards Sedgefield winning the final 6-2.
What a great sporting event to attend after such a difficult time during the Covid pandemic for the club, where all the pools and facilities were closed but all credit to the lads for keeping themselves fit in such difficult times.
The lads played absolutely brilliantly with their teamwork, skills and defensive counter attacks providing the spectators with some fantastic goals and gamesmanship during the day. It has to be said that once again Sedgefield did Co Durham proud. Well done lads, from everyone at Sedgefield Water Polo Club.
September also sees the club starting a new Saturday afternoon, GAMP funded, children’s beginner session for novices to the sport who would like a chance to try this very exciting sport – which is a great progression from swimming lessons, and will be great value for money. It’s lovely to see GAMP funding activities to help the children in the area, which will give them respect, team work skills, a very high level of fitness and a healthy wellbeing. So, a massive thank you from the club goes to GAMP for all their support past and present.
