Newton Aycliffe Rugby Club launched their pre season training campaign last Thursday in order to attract new players and regroup ex players of the club and any new rugby players who may have moved into the town over the last few years.
There is a comprehensive recruitment campaign ongoing to help rebuild the squad for the 2022/23 season. This can include any males over 18yrs who may fancy a new challenge in sport and give rugby a go.
Currently the focus is on general fitness, and some fun ball handling exercises, mainly in the form of touch rugby. Then socialise in the bar afterwards. Over the coming weeks the training will involve ball handling drills, running with the ball, passing and, eventually, tackling drills will be introduced. Unopposed run throughs and mini contact games will be the end product before any pre-season friendlies are introduced.
The official league season starts on 24th September with a home fixture against Northallerton 2nds. Aycliffe Rugby Club have joined the Tees Valley Social League. Consisting of 12 teams that do not have a great distance to travel to away games.
The idea is to bring Rugby Union back to its roots, with the emphasis on friendly competitive games and a good social gathering at the club bars after the matches.
The idea brings great lasting friendships, fitness, good skills of the ever changing game where the RFU constantly adjust rules to protect all players in this great contact sport.
Please come and join the lads at Newton Aycliffe Sports Club, Moore Lane, DL5 5AG. Training starts at 7pm. Message the club on our Facebook page or contact head coach Bob Malvern for any queries, call: 07398 167461.
