Dear Sir,
There has been a lot of discussion and talk on social media, as well as various news outlets, about a total ban on pavement parking.
Although at present there is a ban on pavement parking in some streets in Greater London and at certain times of day or night in others.
In some cases there should be a ban on pavement parking, but there are situations where a ban would cause more problems than helping, such as narrow streets where access would be limited for emergency services and utility vehicles. Then, in these situations, allowed but sign post them appropriately.
There are situations where pavement parking is illegal, but also inappropriate, such as, where the pavement is obstructed and stops pedestrians, people with prams, push chairs, wheelchairs, disabled scooters and our blind friends with assistance dogs; or causes someone to walk on the road to get past. Also across dropped kerbs or obstructing someone’s access to their property.
There are also times when drivers park on a pavement, with two or four wheels, when it is totally unnecessary. There are situations like this where drivers think it assists with the flow of traffic, when in fact traffic can still only flow in one direction at a time.
Also, I’d like to mention parking on grass verges, which is totally unnecessary and leaves behind an unsightly mess, please don’t do it.
We all like to park close to our homes, as well as our destinations, but it is not always viable or even possible. So, please think before you park and look where you could park safely and without inconveniencing anyone, rather than on the pavement or grass verge.
