Newton Aycliffe 1 v Ossett United 3
Newton Aycliffe were looking to build on the victory against old rivals Ashington in midweek, however, Ossett United ran out 3-1 winners at the SecuriCorp Stadium on Saturday.
It was a contest where the final scoreline was incredibly harsh for Aycliffe, where it was a very even game, a mixture of poor finishing and an inspired performance from Ossett’s keeper was what cost Aycliffe the points.
The first half was played at a fast pace, and was very much end to end. Ossett’s TJ Ibrahim using his pace to get a save from Daniel Cameron in the first minute.
Debutant Cole Kiernan was a bright spark going forwards and was unlucky that his shot went wide early in the game.
But, against the run of play, Ossett’s Diego Edwards would take the lead for the away side.
The games tempo slowed after this. But Aycliffe still kept most the possession and had the majority of chances, and the game would turn in favour of the home side when Ossett’s keeper, Joe Green, was judged to have fouled an Aycliffe player in the box, resulting in a brilliant penalty finish by debutant Cole Kiernan on the edge of half time.
The second half began with Aycliffe having the majority of momentum. Jack Clarkson and Ethan Wood had two promising shots, but both were easily saved by Green. Liam Adamson had a promising chance, and Kiernan had several including a chip that went narrowly wide whilst 1-on-1 with the keeper.
But Aycliffe conceded against the run of play again, Desmond Amponsah this time, with a goal where he used all his pace to fire home.
Aycliffe would have attacks late in the game but it was too little too late as Diego Edwards got his second to make it 3-1.
Brian Atkinson’s side now enjoy a brief break with no game this week but return to action on Tuesday 26 September when Sheffield will be the visitors to Moore Lane. Kick off is 7:45pm.
