FC Turbinia welcomed West Auckland WMC to Simpasture this week in the Colin Waites Cup. The teams previously met 3 weeks ago at St Helens Rec, in a game of 2 halves.
FC Turbinia struggled in the first half with Goalkeeper Chris Wilson keeping the score down to just the one goal. But the second half saw a different formation and a different attitude from the entire team, who battled their way back into the game, 2 goals in the last 10 minutes from Daniel Keane and Daniel Dixon handed FC Turbinia the Victory.
This week the story was pretty much the same, West Auckland WMC started the game with a “win at all costs” mentality, they were tough in the tackles and they pressured the ball, not giving “The Tub” a chance to string 3 passes together, again Chris Wilson pulled off 3 fantastic saves in the first half, to keep the home side in it.
The second half started and FC Turbinia were clearly the better team, it was their turn to pressure the ball, and really show “West” why they won the previous fixture.
2 goals from Daniel Dixon saw FC Turbinia take the lead, a consolation goal for West Auckland came 5 minutes from full time, but this made little difference when the final whistle was blown.
The result sees FC Turbina secure their place in the Semi Finals of the Cup, the only team to do so with a game in hand as well as winning every game on the way. This has to be put down to the “Never Say Die” attitude of the team, as a collective, these guys play for the full 90 minutes and never give up no matter what the score is, and that can be seen in their recent run of results in the League too.
This week FC Turbinia are Away to Howden–le-Wear Australian, in a fixture that will see “The Tub” extend their lead at the top of the Division 2 table to 7 points, if they can claim the win!
