The Kitchen at the Work Place on the Business Park has been taken over by Darlington Catering College to provide training and hands on experience for young people wanting to get back into work.

The 12 week course includes theory and practical work preparing food for sale to employees and visitors to the Work Place. Students receive a basic qualification and can move into full time work or further education at the College.

The young people gain valuable experience dealing with customers, handling cash and generally improving communication and people skills.

They plan menus and cook various dishes, pastries and making sandwiches, even using the opportunity to raise cash for charities selling their scones and cakes.

Clare Mitchell a Mancunian living in Kirk Merrington is the Professional Tutor appointed by the College to run the courses. The cafe opens at 9.30am and has a brisk sale of bacon buns at only £1.20p. Lunch includes a hot meal tasty salad, wraps and sandwiches
