Newton Aycliffe supporters are once again rallying round to raise cash for their club in a sponsored walk. More than 20 fans are expected to make the trek to Ebac Northern League champions Spennymoor Town on Saturday 1st September in a fundraising stunt dubbed “Marching On Together”.

The trip, measuring 9 miles, mirrors that taken by 18 fans and staff members last November, which helped raise over £1,600 for the club to support its varying on and off-field projects.

Organiser Barry Waters is hoping for a similar, if not better result to that of last Autumn. “Last year, like a lot of our events, we piloted things to see if we could operate them more frequently as the club grew”.

The Spennymoor trek will start at Moore Lane Park and end at the Brewery Field, home of the Moors.

Waters added: “Supporters can start their walk when they wish. Last year some began at the crack of dawn and arrived in Spennymoor shortly after opening time in one of the local bars, in time to take on board liquid refreshments! We appreciate others may have commitments early on a Saturday, so all we ask is that those who are willing to partake, simply complete their route in time to enjoy the game against one of the league’s true heavyweight sides.

“As a gesture, Newton Aycliffe FC will ensure all walkers receive free entry to the match, and those raising certain incremental amounts of money, will also reap the benefits in a new loyalty scheme operated by the football club.”

Anyone wishing to sign up for the walk can contact Barry on 07864 718243, or email barrywaters212@msn.com, to request a sponsor form, or pick one up from any member of the committee at the next game.

Aycliffe completed their pre-season friendlies with victory over Harrogate Town last Friday night. New striker Paul Robinson scored the late winner as Allan Oliver’s side got the better of a youthful Town in front of 104 spectators at Moore Lane Park.

Aycliffe’s season starts this weekend, against Barrow-in-Furness side Holker Old Boys in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup with Budweiser.
