Students from Woodham Academy recently took part in the ‘Bring it on!’ engineering event held at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland and what an inspiring event it proved to be!
On Thursday 4th October, 50 Year 9 students from Woodham Academy enjoyed this interactive experience, which showcased some of the leading regional and global engineering companies. The 13-14-year-olds had the chance to try many traditional jobs, including driving diggers, welding and changing wheels, as well as new technologies such as virtual reality. The event proved to be a hit with the students with one of the pupils, Ben Graham, saying he had, “A really enjoyable day learning about new and exciting technologies”.
Leading companies present at the event discussed future careers and opportunities within science and engineering. Over 50 of the top businesses provided talks, demonstrations and activities in which the students could take part. Split into 5 themed zones, the students could explore innovative technologies in a range of fields, including chemical, civil and automotive engineering. A spokesman from the global pharmaceutical company Pfizer stated, “This is a fantastic event in which we hope to inspire the next generation of young people. We hope to enlighten and enthuse these young people into the opportunities available to them.”
Mr. Harrison from Woodham Academy added that the event had been an amazing success. He went on to say, “It is fantastic for the school to be able to offer these exciting opportunities to our students. The buzz and enthusiasm that the students now have towards the opportunities available to them is very rewarding for the school.”
This was the second time the “Bring it on!” event has been held and following this year’s success, Woodham Academy looks forward to continuing to provide their students with similar inspiring opportunities.
