Having received a £1.1 million grant from the Department of Education earlier in the year, work has started on building a new Engineering annex at UTC South Durham.
Tom Dower Principal at UTC South Durham said “After months of planning, we’re thrilled to see ground has been broken and work is underway on our new building. The buildings completion will coincide with students starting with us next year, so it is a really exciting opportunity for anyone in the local area who is interested in studying for a future in engineering.”
Specifically, the new building will support students on UTC’s post 16 option of T-Levels. As UTC is one of the only providers in the North East currently offering T-Levels, Catherine Purvis-Mawson, Deputy Principal, added “We’re pleased to be leading the charge in preparing the young engineers of Newton Aycliffe thrive in today’s workplace. This building will be a specialist environment where young people can get the academic understanding and practical skills to be highly successful in their future careers.”
In the coming weeks, UTC has a number of open evenings in which families can attend to learn more about their technical education and engineering specialism. Due to demand, families must book a space via their website utcsouthdurham.org.
Applications to join UTC have recently opened, with students able to join in Year 10 as well as Year 12. Given their successful track record in working with students to develop them into career and life ready individuals, UTC expects to be full from September 2023.
