Great Aycliffe Town Council is pleased to welcome Steven McDonnell as a visiting golf coach to the Oakleaf Golf Complex. An elite sports professional, as a junior having played county cricket and semi-professional football, Steven’s passion was always golf and he turned professional in 2015 with a handicap of +1. Steven lived most of his life in Cambridgeshire and the Midlands but his roots were always in the North East and he moved back in 2013.

Steven’s aim after turning professional in 2015 was to develop golf for the North East of England. He started his golf career at Close House PGA Academy as an assistant professional and now, coming to his third year as a professional, he is well on his way to making his mark in the golf game.

In 2017 Steven delivered the biggest tri-golf project in North East schools and also helped set up and coach in three junior academies, whilst being in regular contact with England Golf and The Golf Foundation. A serious back problem in 2016 hindered his playing career but now with a full recovery Steven hopes to play and deliver golf to a very high standard, having played in Open qualifying in 2017 and many North East/North West PGA events.
