Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, began their season with a heavy defeat by 128 runs away at a bitterly cold Saltburn 2nd XI in the NYSD 2nd division. After being asked to bat first the home side scored a challenging 215 for 9 from the allotted 50 overs despite some good bowling from acting captain Luke Telford (4 for 58) and Ramzan Husssain (3 for 35). In reply, Aycliffe struggled to get any momentum in their innings and were eventually dismissed for 87 after 33.5 overs despite a gritty half century from Joe Teasdale (50 from 80 balls) and 14 runs from 20 balls by Owen Smith.
Newton Aycliffe’s 2nd team hosted Marske 2nd XI in their first game of the season in the NYSD 4th division and came out on top by a huge 154 runs in a terrific performance by the young side, despite the bitterly cold weather. Due to player unavailability, debutant Jimmy Newton was asked to captain the side and, after winning the toss, chose to bat first and his side duly piled up the runs with an impressive 224 all out after exactly 40 overs. Fifteen year old Dan Heaton top scored with a superb career best 49 from 51 balls, 16 year old Tom Dearden (sponsored by Kevin Burton) scored 40 from 48 balls and 15 year old Adam Shaw also scored a career best 31 from 43 balls faced. In reply, the visitors were skittled for just 70 from 21.4 overs thanks to excellent bowling from Tom Dearden (4 for 40), 15 year old Leo Stout (career best 3 for 21) and Jimmy Newton (3 for 10). Talented youngster Dan Heaton followed up his first innings exploits by holding on to four excellent catches in the visitors innings. Special mention must go to the three other players who made their senior debuts today, 12 year old Joey Hayman, and ladies Natasha Grainger and Lucinda Hall who all performed with honours in their team’s memorable start to the season.
