Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, played their final game of the season at home to Rockliffe Park 1st XI, but it was abandoned in the early stages of the second innings when torrential rain brought play to an abrupt halt. Aycliffe’s Chris Palmer, in his last game as captain, won the toss and chose to bat first. Adam Gittins top scored with 33 from 70 balls, including five boundaries and he was supported well by Joe Teasdale (21 off 55 balls) and Chris Palmer (17 off 31 balls) as Aycliffe were dismissed for 150 after 47.4 overs. With the bad weather closing in, the visitor’s hurriedly reached 64 for 1 after 12 overs, with Luke Telford (1 for 27) taking the only wicket to fall, before the deluge brought proceedings to a premature end. However, the bonus points gained by Rockliffe Park gave them enough points to secure promotion to the NYSD first division.
Aycliffe’s first team league record this season is: played 22, won 5, drew 3, lost 13 and one no result due to bad weather. Total points 257 and they finished in 9th place in the NYSD 2nd division.
