Members at local gym CrossFit All Out have been busy representing on the competition floors between Gateshead and Birmingham.

On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th March, 8 teams from All Out battled it out at the Glacier Games Thaw ’18 competition, after qualifying for the event in early February.

In the RX division “Guns and Buns” (Bex Shaw & Matthew Taylor) placed 34th, “The SAS” (Becky Auton and Michael Couch) placed 40th, “Team BSB” (Rachel Burnip and Richie Hackett) placed 16th, “Two Smokin’ Barbells” (Carol Mohan and Sam Slaus) placed 20th, “Team Metcalfe” (Claire Dale and Michael Metcalfe) placed 45th, and “Young & Breathless” (Andrea Clarke and Paul Hilder) finished in 13th place in the over 70 combined division.

In the scaled division “Team Sloth” (Adam Innes and Ruth Burnip) placed 26th, and “Team Little and Large” (Samantha Hall and Stewart Smith) finished in 22nd place. Head Coach Terry Anderson said “this was a really great representation of the level that some of our members are now performing at. Athletes and supporters never cease to amaze us with their commitment in attending these events far and wide. For some it was their very first time competing away from the gym and it was amazing to see all teams putting in 100% effort.”

North East Affiliate League, Gateshead

The NEAL is a competition that is held monthly at CrossFit Glacier in Gateshead, allowing teams of 4 to go head to head in a number of different workouts throughout the evening. On Thursday 29th March three teams from CrossFit All Out fought for a podium spot. “Team All Out 1” consisted of Colin Wooster, Chris Knight, Gemma Whittle and Rachel Burnip.

It was fantastic to see this team being crowned runners up at the event. “Team All Out 2” (Bex Shaw, Carol Mohan, Matthew Taylor and Paul Hilder) placed 4th and “Team Last Resort” (Becky Auton, Claire Dale, Michael Couch and Sam Slaus) placed 6th. All these athletes work so hard and get such fantastic results from the sheer hard graft they put in, week in, week out! It’s great to see them go ALL OUT each and every time!

Earlier this month at the May NEAL event, “Team All Out 1” (Colin Wooster, Gemma Whittle, Richie Hackett and Rachel Burnip) won both workouts, so were crowned overall winners that evening! These athletes have had links at CrossFit All Out for a number of years and at this event they played to their individual strengths as a team and dominated the competition.

Rainhill Trials, Manchester

On Saturday 7th April 4 of our members participated in the Rainhill Spring Trials individual competition in Manchester. For all four of these members this was their first time competing outside of the gym, so it was fantastic to see them all thrive on the competition floor. In the female scaled division Janet Roote qualified for the event in 34th place and then went on to finish 15th in the final alongside Sophie Moffat who qualified 4th and finished 6th overall. In the male scaled division Josh Burlison finished 43rd and Rod Farrow finished 36th. Josh, Rod and Sophie all managed to hit personal best lifts in the first workout which was the strength complex. Rod Farrow said “My first proper competition at the ripe old age of 46 and I hope it’s not the last. Really enjoyed the experience and I would recommend anyone to have a go. You just have to make the commitment to keep trying”.

First Means Everything, Sunderland

On Saturday 14th April Chris McGeevor and Rachel Burnip took part in the First Means Everything Competition in Sunderland. For Rachel it was her first individual competition and she placed 14th, “they were really hard WODs but I loved the challenge. My best finish was 3rd in the max lift snatch workout.

The All Out support crew were awesome too”. Chris finished 22nd and said “It was a great day and thanks to everyone from All Out for the support. I missed out on the final by two places but it just motivates me to work even harder next time!”

Battle of Britain, Birmingham

On Saturday 21st April Bex Shaw, Vicki Finn Smith and Rachel Burnip all travelled down to Birmingham to compete in the Battle of Britain Throwdown competition. The level of competition was very high with some competitors from CrossFit Regionals participating. All three All Out athletes battled their way through 3 gruelling workouts to fight for a place in the final. Rachel Burnip who qualified in 90th place finished in 69th place and Bex Shaw who qualified in 87th place finished in 68th place, both of whom said they were happy just to have qualified and being able to take part in a great event. Vicki Finn Smith set a new personal best of 85KG for her hang clean-front squat- jerk complex and made it to the final where she placed 3rd but unfortunately just missed out on a podium spot and finished fourth overall. Head Coach Terry said “The girls confidently carry out all the CrossFit movements to such a high standard and fully embrace the competition experience.

It was outstanding to see them thriving in such a competitive environment and enjoying the event. I’m really proud of the effort from all of our members.”
