The Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh’s Award students at Woodham Academy completed their first practice hike on Saturday 2nd May.
Students practiced their navigation and First Aid skills on the 10-mile hike. They have been working very hard in the training sessions since September, so it was great to see them building their confidence out in the countryside too. Whilst route finding didn’t always go to plan, there was lots to be learned about map reading. We were very lucky to be able to appreciate the lovely weather and our surroundings, including the bluebells in the woods and meeting various animals along our route.
There were some aching feet and shoulders at the end of the day, as this was the first time many of the students had completed a hike whilst carrying a signification amount of kit. The students displayed brilliant teamwork, were polite to staff and public, considerate of the environment and maintained such a positive attitude, even when the going got a bit tough.
Several students have already completed their Volunteering, Skill and Physical sections of the Award too, so are well on their way to achieving their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Well done to everyone for your progress so far.
