I recently read an article in the Newton News by Councillor Tony Armstrong (no relation), explaining that he is leaving the Liberal Democrats and is reportedly intending to join the Green Party.
If Tony believes this move will help him better support our local community, then that is, of course, his decision. However, I would encourage him to take a closer look at the leadership and policies of the party before making that commitment.
The current leader of the Green Party, Zack Polanski, has faced scrutiny over statements about his background, and some of the party’s policies on issues such as immigration and drug reform are likely to concern many local residents. These positions may not reflect the views of everyone in Newton Aycliffe.
I would simply ask whether this is the kind of party Tony wishes to represent. Before making such an important decision, I hope he will look more deeply into the party’s policies and consider the views and priorities of the people of Newton Aycliffe whom he was elected to serve.
