Over the last few weeks more than 40 pupils from Greenfield, Woodham, and other schools in South West Durham have been eagerly rehearsing and preparing for the first public performance of the South Durham Rock Choir at the Sage Gateshead as part of the Durham Music Service Showcase Celebration.

The South Durham Rock Choir is based at Greenfield Community College (A Specialist Arts and Science School), rehearsing each Thursday under the musical direction of Jane Parker (Durham Music Service) and assisted by Greenfield’s Music Specialist John Tobin.

A rock choir was first started at Greenfield some four years ago and that experimental group has developed and expanded to invite singers from the whole of South Durham, and were extremely pleased to be invited to perform at the Sage this May. The choir repertoire ranges from the tub-thumping ‘Some Night’ by Fun to soulful refrains of the Leonard Cohen classic ‘Hallelujiah’.

Rehearsals are held at Greenfield Community College in the Music department every Thursday from 4pm – 5pm; however the singing usually gets underway much earlier with Mr Tobin. If you are of Secondary School Age and would like more details, please contact Greenfield Arts on 01325 379 048.
