Durham County Council has listened to the views of its residents in order to put together a Cycling Strategy and Action Plan.
A recent eight week public consultation received a range of mainly supportive responses, with most of the comments on cycling issues relating specifically to Durham City.
Respondents were mostly positive about the strategy and action plan, and the initiatives contained within it, with some issues raised regarding road safety and the need for secure cycle parking.
Comments have been taken on board and incorporated into the final version.
Durham County Council Cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, Cllr Neil Foster, said: “We want to create a cycling friendly county and our overall aim is to improve the standards for cycling and cyclists. We can all benefit in terms of improving our health and with increased pressure on household budgets, cycling offers opportunities to save money as well.
“We are also hoping that the action plan will promote greater tolerance and understanding between all those who use roads so we can all travel safely.”
A report on the Cycling Strategy and Action Plan will be discussed by Durham County Council’s Cabinet next Wednesday (July 11).
Following the Cabinet meeting the strategy and action plan will be published on the council’s website.
