Sadly, this year we have seen a number of young people from our town end their lives. Even though people have loving families and friends supporting them, they find it tough to get through difficult times and do not seek help. We believe no-one should suffer in silence. It is hard to allow ourselves to be vulnerable and ask for help but there are times when we should. Depression, anxiety, stress, low self esteem, worry and panic attacks may stem from life changes such as illness, trauma, bereavement, work or relationship issues, and money problems.

The Hub of Wishes mental health charity, based in Silverdale House, provides a mental health drop-in service with an open-door policy for adults over 18. We exist to support anyone who may be suffering emotional distress, mental health issues or having hard times; also their carers and families. We support those coming out of hospital, help prevent re-admission and assist them to become more independent or have healthier lifestyles.

Anyone wishing to use our service will initially have a private chat with staff. If unable to help, we will signpost them on to the relevant organisation/s. If we can help, we will agree a recovery plan with them and they will be supported in a friendly, non-judgmental environment. They will:

• Be surrounded by friendly faces

• Always have someone to listen to them

• Be encouraged to take steps to improve their wellbeing

• Learn life skills such as house-keeping and cooking

• Be able to use IT facilities and learn computer skills

• Be given advice and information, use our small library of books

• Have access to alternative therapies by appointment (£10 per session)

• Have access to daily activities, workshops and accredited courses

• Have a social outlet, attend social events including day trips

We are open from 10.00am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday and offer daily activities:

If you have a skill or knowledge you could pass onto our members, why not consider becoming a volunteer at Hub of Wishes? Volunteering can be very enriching and rewarding. Some of our past volunteers have gained social work or counselling degrees/qualifications and now work in the mental health sector or other social capacity. Whilst volunteering you will gain a sense of achievement for yourself and also have a positive impact on the lives of others.
