Class 4 from Walworth Primary School recently visited The Veteran Centre in Newton Aycliffe, where they expressed heartfelt gratitude to ex-servicemen and women for their bravery and courage in defending our country.
The visit was organised to honour those who have served and to help pupils understand the importance of the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces. During the visit, children presented veterans with thank-you cards, artwork, letters, and poetry – all part of a whole-school initiative to show appreciation for the service and dedication of Britain’s veterans.
Pupils also enjoyed learning about the wide range of programmes and activities offered by The Veteran Centre, which support not only veterans, but also the wider community. From woodwork and virtual reality sessions to art and modelling groups, the Centre provides a welcoming space that fosters camaraderie, creativity, and connection.
The trip concluded with a visit to The Trenches Café, where children and staff enjoyed seeing the café’s offerings of fresh, home-cooked meals at affordable prices.
Class teacher Mrs. Michelle Smith reflected on the experience, saying: “It has been an absolute pleasure for our children to visit this Centre and engage with the veterans. It is important that pupils have the opportunity to experience real-life learning opportunities, further developing their knowledge and skills as they prepare for adulthood. I want to thank Joanna and Chris for allowing our pupils this opportunity; all of the children have thoroughly enjoyed it and created some wonderful memories.”
The visit not only strengthened the school’s ties with the local community but also gave pupils a meaningful insight into the lives and experiences of those who have served our nation.
