A group of Woodham Academy engineering students, recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the Nissan UK plant in Sunderland – one of the most advanced automotive manufacturing sites in Europe. The visit offered an invaluable insight into the real-world applications of engineering and manufacturing technologies, as well as a glimpse into future career paths within the industry.
The day began with an engaging introduction to the range of engineering careers available at Nissan, from design and development to production and quality control. Students had the chance to hear from experienced engineers and apprentices who shared their journeys and experiences working in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
A highlight of the visit was the guided tour of the factory floor, where students observed the production of the popular Nissan Qashqai. They were able to see advanced robotics and automated systems in action, alongside skilled technicians working in harmony to assemble the vehicle. Witnessing the precision, teamwork, and technology involved in car manufacturing left a lasting impression on everyone.
To round off the visit, students took part in a hands-on engineering challenge to design and build air-powered cars. The goal was to see whose design could travel the furthest, sparking creativity, problem-solving, and a bit of friendly competition. The activity brought together key STEM skills in a fun and engaging way, highlighting the practical side of engineering design.
Overall, the visit to Nissan UK proved to be both educational and inspiring, giving students a clearer vision of the exciting possibilities that a career in engineering can offer.
