Due to icy weather, Newton Aycliffe have had their last three fixtures postponed, two of which were home games against Cleethorpes Town and Liversedge respectively. Meanwhile, Aycliffe’s away fixture at Ashington, due to be played on Saturday the 11th was also postponed. This means Newton Aycliffe are now going to Ashington on Tuesday 28th January. Along with Newton Aycliffe’s home game against high flying Cleethorpes Town, which is now on Tuesday 4th February. A date for the recently postponed Liversedge game has not been announced yet. As of now, Newton Aycliffe’s next fixture is an away trip to Brighouse Town on Saturday 25th January.
NEW SIGNING
Newton Aycliffe announced the return of longstanding centreback Aaron Brown. Brown played well over 300 games for Aycliffe in his first stint, and was a constant fixture and captain in the Northern League title winning side and rejoins the club from Bishop Auckland, after making 20 appearances this season. Manager Brian Atkinson stated: “Aaron needs no introduction. He’s played for the club before, he knows us and we know him, and we know exactly what we’ll get from him. He’s got bags of experience which will only help us moving forward.”
MIDSEASON RECAP
As we approach January’s end, Newton Aycliffe find themselves in 6th, just one position and three points outside the playoffs. Dunston are above them with 44 points and two games in hand. North Ferriby and Emley are fourth and third respectively with 45 and 48 points, with the top two being Cleethorpes with 51 and Belper with 53. Aycliffe have already taken three points once from both Ferriby and Belper, both of which were away too. Aycliffe have yet to meet Cleethorpes at home, but have drawn and lost against Emley. Garforth could be a potential playoff dark horse in 8th, and they’re the only side Aycliffe have not played yet. A rather large gulf exists between 10th placed Carlton and 13th placed Consett who have 29 points, and one would assume no teams below Carlton have any chance of making the playoffs.
