Newcastle University study wants to hear your experiences of hospital volunteering!
A new oral history project is recruiting for interviewees who volunteered in hospitals in Cumbria, Northumberland, and County Durham, 1979-1997, especially in hospital radio and Leagues of Friends.
Volunteers will have the chance to share their expertise and perspectives on the NHS, British and Northern identity, deindustrialisation, and life in the rural North of England, 1979-1997. This new study wants to explore memories of the NHS and life in the North in the 1980s and ‘90s, in the words of people who are passionate about it.
The project is being carried out by Lily Tidman, a PhD History candidate, at Newcastle University. With degrees from Oxford University and UCL, Lily has previous experience in oral history interviews and has received training from the Oral History Society and Newcastle University’s Oral History Unit. The project is overseen by supervisors Professor Graham Smith, Dr Vicky Long and Professor Clare Bambra.
The project is funded by UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), through the Northern Bridge Consortium Doctoral Training Programme.
