The Backhouses of Darlington, 1774-1836. A talk by Dr. John Banham (Secretary of Durham County Local History Society).
The Backhouses and their Quaker partners were important figures in financing the
Stockton/Darlington Railway, Dr. Banham will explain how their 18th century linen business developed into a bank and expanded in the early 19th century to have branches throughout the north east. In 1896, Backhouses Bank merged with Barclays.
Talk will take place on Thursday 9th November at 7.30pm in Middridge Village Hall.
