A new Lodge Banner was formally dedicated at the Lodge of Progress during a special ceremony held at the Chester-Le-Street Masonic Centre on Friday, 16th January 2026.
The banner was generously gifted to the Lodge by Past Master John Rutherford, given in loving memory of his wife, Jan, who was called to the Grand Lodge above in October 2024. The dedication marked a deeply moving moment for members and guests alike, reflecting both remembrance and renewal at the heart of Masonic life.
Rather than choosing a traditional memorial, John elected to present something living and active, an enduring symbol that will continue to serve the Lodge for generations to come. The banner stands as a testament not only to Jan’s memory, but also to her quiet yet profound support of Freemasonry. She encouraged her husband’s Masonic journey, gave generously, helped the Lodge, and understood Freemasonry not simply as a private interest, but as a way of shaping men who then go out to shape the world. Through this gift, her memory is woven not into stone, but into the continuing life of the Lodge itself.
Speaking about the gift, John said:
“This banner is a fitting tribute to Jan and everything she stood for. She believed strongly in the values of Freemasonry and was always proud of the work the Lodge does, both within these walls and beyond them. I wanted to give something that would live on, something that would continue to serve the Lodge and its members. I know she would have been deeply proud to see her memory honoured in this way, and to know that it will remain part of the Lodge of Progress for many years to come.”
The dedication ceremony was conducted by Julian Ward, Provincial Grand Chaplain for Durham Freemasons, and was witnessed by visitors and members of the Provincial Team, led by the Head of Durham Freemasons, John Watts. The dedication was further honoured by the presence of Honorary Member of the Lodge John Thompson, former Head of Durham Freemasons and now Assistant Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England.
The dedication of the new banner was both a solemn and uplifting occasion, reinforcing the Lodge’s commitment to remembrance, continuity, and progress. It now stands as a lasting symbol of love, support, and the enduring principles that Freemasonry seeks to uphold, accompanying the Lodge of Progress as it continues its work for present and future generations.
