John and Ruby Maull are celebrating an incredible milestone as they mark their diamond wedding anniversary, surrounded by the love of family and friends.
Ruby, who was born in Kirk Merrington, and John, who grew up on a farm in Trimdon, first met in the most ordinary of places – on a bus going to the Bishop Auckland cinema. That chance encounter would spark a lifelong partnership that has now spanned 60 remarkable years.
In their working lives, both John and Ruby were dedicated and hard working. Ruby was employed at the clothing factory in Ferryhill before later working at Moore Lane Play School, where she became a familiar and caring presence in the community. John began his career working on Arthur Stevenson’s farm in Leasingthorne and went on to spend most of his working life at Black & Decker.
The couple settled in Newton Aycliffe in 1966, moving to their home on Christopher Walk, then Mellanby Crescent, where they have built a lifetime of memories together.
Now retired, John enjoys keeping active with golf, following football – especially supporting Sunderland – and taking walks with Stan, the family dog belonging to their daughter, Nicola. Ruby, meanwhile, enjoys spending time doing jigsaw puzzles and meeting friends for lunch, though she is best known within the family for being the one who keeps everything running smoothly.
Family remains at the heart of their lives. John and Ruby have one daughter, Nicola, son-in-law Steve and a grandson, Niall, all of whom are immensely proud to celebrate this special occasion with them.
To mark their diamond anniversary, the couple will enjoy a family meal at Woodham Golf Club, joined by extended family, including nieces and nephews, in what promises to be a joyful and memorable gathering.
Reflecting on six decades of marriage, Ruby offers simple, but heartfelt, advice for lasting love: “Have a lot of patience!” A sentiment that has clearly stood the test of time.
