Middridge Village Hall
Wednesday 14th January at 7.30pm
Chris Lloyd makes a welcome return and his subject is ‘Attacking the Devil and Sinking the Unsinkable’, WT Stead, the greatest Victorian reformer you’ve never heard of.
He was responsible for getting the world’s first children’s protection act passed, but only by using scandalous tactics which he learned here in the North East as Editor of The Northern Echo.
He played a fascinating part in making mass murderer, Mary Ann Cotton appear such a devil and took an extraordinary interest in a ghost which punched a human.
He was also the most famous British person to drown on the Titanic and just as his journalism skills were forged in Darlington, so were large parts of The Titanic forged here – although the company responsible later tried to airbrush out its involvement in the world’s greatest maritime disaster.
Everyone is most welcome: Admission £3 which includes refreshments.
