Great Aycliffe Town Council is proud to celebrate local hero Emma Williams, the latest recipient of the Community Recognition Award.
This award acknowledges individuals whose dedication and outstanding contributions make Great Aycliffe a better place for everyone to live and work.
Emma, founder and principal of Aycliffe Dance Academy since 2010, has created a safe and welcoming space for children and adults to express themselves freely through dance. For many, the academy is more than a dance school – it is a community hub that promotes social connection and supports mental health.
Emma’s many contributions to the community include providing opportunities for students to take part in dance exams, pantomimes, annual shows and displays, helping them grow in confidence and ability. She also organises fun days and activity events for both dance students and the wider community.
Notably, this year the Dance Academy collaborated with Durham Constabulary to create a moving dance piece performed at the launch of the Knife Angel in Newton Aycliffe town centre.
Emma also serves as a school governor at Sugar Hill Primary School, advocating for learning initiatives such as mini medics, arranging care home visits at Christmas, and involving children in local events like VE Day celebrations.
Amy Errington, who nominated Emma, said: “Emma opened the dance school back in 2010 and has played a vital role in creating a safe place for many children and adults in the community to come along and to express themselves freely and without judgement. For many, it’s a place to come to socialise and improve their mental health and welfare.”
The Mayor, Councillor Ken Robson, presented Emma with a medal and certificate at the Council offices, saying: “It is fabulous to be able to reward Emma for her hard work on behalf of the community. We have some wonderful talented young people, and Emma brings out the best in them.”
