A County Durham woman recovering from a life-changing stroke has praised the benefits of hydrotherapy at the Pioneering Care Centre (PCC) in Newton Aycliffe, after seeing significant improvements in just a few weeks.
Carol suffered a stroke in March and spent ten weeks in hospital recovering. At one stage, she was given only a 75% chance of survival and was told she might never walk again. Unable to speak or move following the stroke, Carol required extensive support and rehabilitation before returning home.
Determined to regain her independence, Carol has worked tirelessly on her recovery and now uses a walking stick to enjoy short walks around her garden and local area.
Carol was introduced to hydrotherapy by her friend Kathleen, who regularly attends sessions at the PCC. Although she had never tried hydrotherapy before, Carol decided to give it a go as part of her rehabilitation.
After just three weeks of attending the hydrotherapy pool, Carol has already noticed improvements in the movement and flexibility of her arm, which had become tight following the stroke.
Carol said: “Through doing exercises in the hydrotherapy pool, I’ve gained greater movement and flexibility. I can now fasten the Velcro on my shoes after a session, something that had previously been incredibly difficult. The warm water, relaxing jets and welcoming environment have also helped reduce anxiety and given me something positive to look forward to each week.”
Kathleen, who supports Carol during sessions, has witnessed the progress first-hand. She said: “Week by week, Carol’s range of movement has improved, allowing her arm to sit in a more natural position and move more freely. The pool provides a fantastic, supportive environment for rehabilitation.”
Kathleen also benefits from using the hydrotherapy pool herself, explaining that it helps her manage both rheumatoid arthritis and mental health challenges.
