An historic bridge dating back to 1894 has reopened following extensive works to refurbish and repair the structure following age-related damage.

The Durham County Council project for the Causeway Bridge in Wolsingham has delivered significant improvements to safeguard the long-term integrity of the important structure.

Works have seen the repair of age-related damage, waterproofing of the bridge deck to protect from future deterioration, resurfacing to provide a smoother carriageway and the repair and painting of critical structural elements.

These essential upgrades will provide long-lasting protection, helping to minimise the need for future maintenance, and ensure the bridge remains safe and reliable for residents and visitors.

Cllr Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “We’re delighted that the Causeway Bridge in Wolsingham has reopened after our refurbishment works which will ensure the structure is protected, improved, and ready for the future.

“We’d like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation throughout the works, the support has been invaluable. It’s fantastic that this important route is back in use.”
