A County Durham woman, who turned her own cancer experience into a lifeline for others, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM).
Allison White, founder of Great Aycliffe Cancer Support Group, received the honour at Durham Castle in recognition of founding the charity in February 2014.
Having experienced the challenges of cancer herself, Allison was determined to ensure others would not face the journey alone. Today, the charity provides free practical and emotional support to patients and families across County Durham and Darlington.
Allison said: “I never imagined the group would grow into what it is today, or that I would receive a British Empire Medal. I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved, but none of it would have been possible without our wonderful volunteers, trustees and supporters.”
Her work has also been recognised by the BBC Make a Difference Awards, where she was a finalist and received a Highly Commended award.
Urgent appeal for volunteer drivers
The charity provides transport to hospital appointments, welfare advice, emotional support, social activities and respite breaks.
Its volunteer drivers complete around 200 patient transport journeys each month, helping people attend vital cancer treatment. However, rising demand means more drivers are urgently needed.
Allison said: “We are desperately short of volunteer drivers, and the number of newly diagnosed cancer patients needing our help continues to increase. Even a few hours of your time could make a tremendous difference. Nobody should have the additional worry of how they will get to hospital for treatment.”
Volunteers must be aged 25 or over, hold a full UK driving licence and have access to their own vehicle. Mileage expenses are paid, and DBS checks are arranged by the charity.
Allison hopes her award will raise awareness and encourage more people to get involved.
“Although the BEM has been awarded to me, I see it as recognition of everything we have achieved together. My greatest wish is that the charity continues supporting cancer patients and their families for many years to come.”
