A talented 14-year-old cyclist from Houghton-le-Spring has secured sponsorship support for the 2026 season and will compete across both road and track disciplines.
Tom Sailes will race throughout 2026 with individual sponsorship backing, proudly representing Protech Velocissimo as he continues his development in competitive cycling. Despite his young age, Tom has already demonstrated strong potential on the national stage. He won a National Track Omnium event in Dundee and previously qualified for the National Track Finals at the Olympic Velodrome. He has also secured individual victories at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and achieved podium finishes across local circuit races. Tom has recently returned from a winter training camp in Gran Canaria, where he continued his preparation ahead of the 2026 season.
For the coming season, Tom will compete in a full programme of road and track events, focusing on continued development, consistency and performance. His approach to the sport is built on discipline, hard work and long-term progression.
Tom is supported this season by Protech, Steel & Alloy and Desco, whose backing provides essential assistance with equipment, preparation and competition opportunities.
A spokesperson for Protech said:
“Tom is a dedicated and ambitious young rider with a strong work ethic. We’re proud to support his development for the 2026 season and look forward to seeing his continued progress across road and track.”
Speaking about the season ahead, Tom said:
“I’m really grateful for the support I’ve received for 2026. Competing across both road and track will help me continue developing as a rider. I’m focused on working hard, staying consistent and making the most of every opportunity. I’ll wear the jersey with pride this season and, if you see me out training on the local roads, make sure to say hello.”
A spokesperson from sponsor, Steel & Alloy, Newton Aycliffe, said “Gonvarri Steel & Alloy Processing are incredibly proud to be supporting Tom as part of our commitment to championing healthy living and creating positive opportunities for young people. His work ethic, determination, and passion for cycling, are truly inspiring. Tom is a fantastic role model, and we’re delighted to be part of his journey as he continues to push boundaries and encourage others to get active.”
With strong backing and clear ambition, Tom now looks ahead to a busy 2026 campaign as he continues building experience and representing the North East within the sport.
