Newton Aycliffe households will, next month, be invited to easily dispose of their real Christmas Trees and, at the same time, help support the region’s most valued hospice.
Every January, Darlington Rotary Club teams up with Darlington’s St. Teresa’s Hospice to tour streets in Newton and School Aycliffe, plus Heighington, collecting used Christmas Trees, saving homeowners the mess of their trees’ disposal. In return, residents offer the hospice a small donation.
“This is a win-win venture for everyone”, said Rotary club organiser David Hayward. “We effortlessly take away all the trees and the hospice gains from much needed funds. I have 80 volunteers and 17 large vans all ready to go for our collection on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th January.”
Hospice Chief Executive Nicola Myers said: “This project has become an essential addition to our fundraising calendar. We are very grateful to Darlington Rotary for their invaluable support.”
Over three quarters of the hospice’s £4m annual running costs must be raised in-house to allow them to continue treating, totally free, over 1200 local residents who have life- limiting illnesses. And, over the last 14 years, the tree collection scheme has raised over £100,000 for hospice funds.
