Dear Sir,
My name is Hazel Martin and I have been working with a small team, specifically the Newton Aycliffe Veterans Community and Sisters of Support, to get my artwork shown next to Shoezone in the Cornmill Shopping Centre in Darlington. Our days have been from Thursday 7th August to Saturday 9th August. Ideally, Wednesday the 6th of August should have been included, but these were the dates the Cornmill had available.
Why these dates were chosen is that my artwork is a replica of the Children’s peace monument in Hiroshima, Japan, and it’s in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Atomic bombs being dropped on Hiroshima (6th August) and Nagasaki (9th August). The inspiration behind the peace was the story of Sadako Saskatoon, a 12 year old girl who was exposed to radiation from the atomic bomb blast at two, and 10 years later folded over 1000 peace cranes before she died of cancer.
My team and I have made an interactive display for the community by demonstrating how to fold origami peace cranes, to spread awareness of the destruction of atomic weapons and why we should not repeat the evils of war.
Hazel Martin.
