An open invitation has been extended to all to join a special ceremony in Darlington to pay tribute to our Armed Forces personnel, past and present.
Individuals, schools, community groups and businesses are welcome to take part as we host the annual event which includes a parade and Raising the Flag ceremony in the Market Square on Friday 26 June to mark Armed Forces Day (27 June).
Organised by Darlington Borough Council and 50 (N) Signal Squadron, the celebrations will be led by the Mayor of Darlington Councillor Helen Crumbie, Deputy Lieutenant Commander Ian Berry and Brigadier Paul Baker.
A parade of representatives from the Armed Forces, military associations, veterans and civic guests will leave the Town Hall at 10.20am on Friday 26 June, to make its way to the Market Square.
Once in position, an Inspection of the Parade will then be carried out by the Deputy Lieutenant, The Mayor and Military Officers. The ceremony will include the traditional flag-raising, speeches, national anthem as well as paying tribute to the fallen and laying wreaths on the Bradford Stone in the Market Square.
The Commemorative Victoria Cross (VC) Stone was laid for Lt Commander George Bradford is in the Market Square. You can learn more about Lt Commander Bradford, ‘the Bradford Brothers’ and Durham Light Infantry in Darlington Libraries Centre for Local Studies from the week of Armed Forces Day.
A commemorative ‘Darlington Armed Forces Day’ coin has also been minted and will be presented to all veterans in attendance.
Local school children have been invited to take part in the celebrations, with primary schools taking part in a competition to design a poster for the event. Courtesy of 50 Signals Squadron, children will also have the opportunity to interact with military displays, handle equipment and try on uniforms.
Anyone who wishes to attend is asked to be at the Market Square before 10.15am. All are welcome.
Mayor of Darlington Cllr Helen Crumbie said: “This event is a chance for us all to say thank you and show our support to those who make up our Armed Forces, as well as service families, veterans and cadets. We’re delighted to once again raise the flag in tribute and look forward to welcoming as many local residents, school children, businesses and community groups as possible to join us in the Market Square for this special annual ceremony.”
