Walk to Shildon Locomotion
Last month some of our members enjoyed one of our favourite sunny walks: from Newton Aycliffe to the Shildon Locomotion museum. Followed by refreshments of course!
Women and the Railways
At our last meeting we had an enlightening talk by Alison Grange from Hopetown in Darlington on the roles and inequalities of women in the early 20th century, working on the railways.
Eldon Group Meeting
A number of our members attended the annual Eldon group meeting. Our hosts were Howden le Wear at Shildon WI and they treated us to an evening of entertainment by Northern Voices and a delicious supper. Aycliffe Village won the decorated plate competition.
ACLE
Members of the WI were involved in a skills evening with our local young people’s ACLE group. Skills such as sewing, crocheting, ironing and communication skills were shared and practised by the eager and fabulous young people. In return they treated us to tea and cake.
Coffee n Chat
Our next Coffee n Chat refill be held on Wednesday 11th November, when there will be an opportunity to paint peg dolls for our display. Everyone is welcome to come along for a drink and a chat in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. You don’t have to be a member of the WI.
Other Events
Last month, residents from St. Clare’s Court care home made birthday cards to send to their relatives. Book Club meets once a month with books kindly provided by Durham Library Service. Members have been working on a poppy display for Remembrance Day, which will be on display on the village green at the beginning of November. We were represented at the Durham Federation Autumn Council Meeting and we continue to collect items for St Clare’s church food bank.
Our Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 18th November at 7pm in the Village Hall which will be an evening of crafts for Christmas. Always a very relaxed, social evening. Visitors are most welcome to join us. For more information about Aycliffe Village WI and our events, trips and visits, email: aycliffevillage@durhamwi.co.uk
