The Liberal Democrats have secured a decisive victory in the Horndale by-election for Great Aycliffe Town Council, with local resident Richard Burchell elected in a straight contest against Reform UK. The result is being seen as a strong endorsement of community-focused representation over national political messaging.
Councillor Michael Stead (Aycliffe North & Middridge) said: “This result sends a clear message from residents – they want councillors focused on Newton Aycliffe, not Westminster. Reform’s campaign leaned heavily on national talking points, but that simply doesn’t reflect what people care about here. Residents want action on local issues, not slogans. Richard Burchell is a genuine local champion who understands the area and will work hard for the community from day one.”
Liberal Democrat Group Leader on Great Aycliffe Town Council, Linzi Aston, added: “This is an excellent result and shows that, when given the choice, voters back strong local representation over political noise. Richard will be a valuable addition to the Town Council and a strong voice for residents.”
The Liberal Democrats say the result demonstrates that voters in Newton Aycliffe expect their Town Council to focus on local priorities, with little appetite for national political posturing.
