To anyone who wasn’t there, our last Friday lunchtime jazz #bishopaucklandjazz was an absolute cracker. The distinguished statesman of British Jazz, Alan Barnes, graced Bishop Auckland with his cultured saxophone and clarinet playing in a wonderfully constructed programme. If I were a Bell and Rhythm Changes on alto sax were quickly followed by a smooth Bossa on clarinet. Then out came the baritone sax for a delightfully floated version of Skylark and Bernie’s Tune. He finished on alto with Dreamsville from Peter Gunn and there was still time for an encore of Caravan with some outrageously slick and exciting solos from all of the musicians.
Throughout the event, Alan gave great credit to his trio of Mick Shoulder (double bass), Rick Laughlin (piano) and Tim Johnston (drums).
He also enjoyed a great rapport with the near capacity audience, sharing some great stories and inviting comments from those gathered.
The next event will be on Friday 13th March at 1.00pm in the Methodist Church and will feature the welcome return of popular singer Paul Skerrit for some more smooth and cool lunchtime tones.
