Dear Sir,
As a 70+ driver, I agree with Joy Allen (PCC) and the Government, as regards sight checks. Like most older people, I have a sight test every two years and do agree that older drivers (70+), should have a compulsory sight check. Also having some type of health and physical check would help, to see if drivers are physically fit as well as the DVLA knowing all their health matters and if it would impede their ability to drive.
But, who would pay the extra costs? Yes, sight checks are free for over 70’s, but a medical, or even getting a declaration form signed by your GP, could come with a cost.
There is one sticking point to all this, why victimise the over 70’s, I’m quite sure there are a number of under 70’s, who have sight and physical problems, even at 17 and all the way up to 69, who don’t declare them to the DVLA.
Why not have all drivers have these checks?
For under 70’s every five years, but once again, who is going to cover the cost?
Alan Hindmarch.
