Around Town and Rotary Newton Aycliffe; Twiddle Muffs. We have been asked for information on why Andy and I are working with Rotary Newton Aycliffe to distribute Twiddle Muffs. What Twiddle Muffs are, and how and why they help people with Dementia. Twiddle Muffs are a kind of knitted muff with different textures and items attached which patients with dementia can safely fiddle with. People with dementia often have restless hands and like to have something to keep their hands occupied. So, Twiddle Muffs are a great source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation, and keep their hands warm and occupied at the same time. Textured, with various items attached, they can offer sensory stimulation and comfort for individuals with dementia, particularly those with restless hands, a way to keep hands occupied, soothe restlessness, and reduce agitation, contributing to overall well-being and calmness.
Sensory Stimulation: Twiddle Muffs offer a variety of textures, colours, and items like buttons, beads and ribbons, stimulating the senses and keeping hands busy.
Tactile Engagement: The act of touching, stroking and twiddling with the different textures on the muff can be a calming and soothing experience, reducing anxiety and distress.
Comfort and Security: The soft, cozy material of the muff can provide a sense of comfort and security, particularly helpful for individuals with dementia who may experience anxiety or agitation.
Reduced Restlessness: The repetitive motions of twiddling can help to redirect restless hands and keep them engaged, preventing self-harm or other undesirable behaviors.
Increased Wellbeing: By providing a source of comfort, stimulation, and engagement, twiddlemuffs can contribute to the overall well-being and mental health of individuals with dementia.
