Second phase of Woodland Road work announced

Preparations are underway for the start of the second phase of work to improve a major  cycling and pedestrian route to the town centre.
The aim of the work is to create a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists from West Park to the town centre as part of the Tees Valley Combined Authority’s (TVCA) Tees Valley local cycling and walking infrastructure plan
The first phase  included making improvements to Duke Street and creating a cycle route along part of Woodland Road.
The second phase, which will start later this year, will see the extension of the cycle route from the Hollyhurst Road junction along Woodland Road to the Tennis Dene.

The footpaths will remain mostly unchanged, with priority crossings being introduced on side streets to give greater visibility to people walking along Woodland Road.

Where possible the work has incorporated comments made during the consultation in 2022.  Statutory notices about the changes to parking restrictions will be posted in the press and on our website on Wednesday 27 August. Anyone who would like to comment, object or support the proposals must do so in writing during the statutory period of 21 days.

In advance of the main works starting, drainage improvement work is needed and utility services will be working in the area. The council is working with the utility companies to plan these works so that any disruption is kept to a minimum.

Libby McCollom, cabinet member for local services, said: “We remain committed to providing a walking and cycling route from West Park to the town centre and the proposal is intended to meet as many needs as possible.
“We have carefully considered what is needed to deliver this work with the minimum amount of impact to residents during construction. However, we know this type of work will cause some disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”A start date for the main work will be announced later this year.
