Darlington Piano Society’s 2024-25 season continues on Sunday 16th February, at 3pm in Central Hall, at the Dolphin Centre with a recital by Sofya Gulyak. Sofya was awarded First Prize and the Princess Mary Gold Medal at the 16th Leeds International Piano Competition, the first woman to achieve this distinction.

Since then, she has appeared internationally to great critical and public acclaim in such venues as La Scala Theatre in Milan, Salle Cortot and Salle Pleyel in Paris, London’s Wigmore Hall, Moscow Conservatory, Konzerthaus in Berlin, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Kennedy Centre in Washington, and in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo. She is currently a piano professor at the Royal College of Music in London.

Her programme brings a mix of works by J.S.Bach arranged by the prolific pianist/composer/arranger Ferruccio Busoni (whose arrangements are far better known that his own compositions) and works by Chopin arranged by Liszt, as well as works by Chopin, Liszt and Cesar Franck.

Greg Johnson, Chairman, says “having previously hosted Anny Tsybuleva, the 2015 and second female winner to the Society, it is an honour for the Society to welcome Sofya to Darlington. Her programme is one of great interest and appeal to all who enjoy the art of the arranger, especially where these demonstrate the appreciation by great composers of others”.

Details of the full programme are available at www.dpiano.co.uk. where tickets can be purchased online. Tickets are also available at the door on the day, price £18, with under 21’s free.
