Inspired by his lifelong love of theatre, George, a resident at Laurel Place care home in Bishop Auckland, recently enjoyed an exciting trip to Sunderland Empire Theatre to see the classic musical Mary Poppins.
A keen theatre enthusiast, George is no stranger to the stage. Previous theatre trips include Hamilton and Miss Saigon last October, experiences that have further fuelled his passion.
Laurel Place supports adults living with complex needs arising from neurological and physical health conditions.
Team members at the home have played an important role in helping George pursue his love of theatre, securing discounts and supporting him to book tickets, carefully choose the best seats, and budget for the shows he is most excited to see.
George’s enthusiasm for theatre has further inspired him to take part in live performances. A confident performer, George impressed judges at his audition for the Bishop Auckland Theatre Society with his rendition of songs from Les Misérables, delivering what the judging panel described as an “incredible” and “moving” performance.
Ahead of the audition, colleagues at Laurel Place came together to support George with his preparations, with the entire team forming an eager, captive audience while he practiced his songs.
George left the audition feeling proud and encouraged by the positive feedback and he is now looking forward to performing in both the Bishop Auckland Theatre Society Summer Show and the Durham Rock Choir.
Speaking about his upcoming performances, George said:
“I love theatre and singing ,and it’s so fun to learn with everyone a big group. I can’t wait for the next one!”
George has been building his skills by taking weekly singing lessons at Laurel Place, learning new songs from some of his favourite musicals, including Les Misérables, Hamilton and Miss Saigon.
Laurel Place Activities Coordinator, Nina, has been alongside George on his journey, supporting him to build confidence and embrace his passion.
Reflecting on his progress, Nina said:
“We’re all so proud of George. It’s been amazing to see his confidence grow and see him really settle in at Laurel Place. Supporting him to achieve his goals means a lot to all of us, and we’re so excited to see him on all his adventures.”
There is even more excitement ahead as they work together to plan additional theatre trips and have set their sights on a future visit to London, where George can experience a West End musical.
The team at Laurel Place continues to support George in developing his communication skills and independence, ensuring he can continue to shine both on and off the stage.
