A supernatural mystery described as ‘Byker Grove meets Scream’ will have its regional premiere this month.

Durham County Council’s Gala Durham will be showing feature film The Brook on Monday 19 October.

Created by Durham-born filmmaker Paul Stainthorpe, of Hazy Pine Pictures, The Brook fuses mystery with coming-of-age horror to create a chilling production, which debuted at London’s FrightFest earlier this year.

The film follows art student Jacob who moves to Elmbrook, the village where his mother grew up.

Elmbrook is steeped in strange folklore and whispered legends, with locals believing the village is protected by a puma that watches over the “good.”

But when one of the good locals mysteriously vanishes, Jacob and his friends, armed with a mysterious video camera that shows one hour into the past, uncover clues that pull them deeper into Elmbrook’s bizarre secrets.

What begins as a search for answers soon spirals into a dangerous mystery.

Filmed in locations across the region including Framwellgate School, Eastgate, Stanhope, Newton Hall, and Zerox Club in Newcastle, the film also stars a predominantly North East cast.

Audiences may also recognise familiar faces, including Helen Chong and Kieron Michael who have both performed in Gala Durham’s pantomimes.

Lizzie Glazier, artistic director at Gala Durham, said: “We’re excited to host the premiere of The Brook right here at Gala Durham.

“This incredible production is a pure North East creation, featuring talented actors, the region’s best locations, and our own Durham-born director.

“The Brook is the perfect film to watch as we head towards Halloween, so we’d encourage everyone to come along and help us celebrate this amazing regional achievement while getting into the spooky spirit.”

Following the screening, Paul, Helen and members of the team will take to the stage for a special Q&A.

Paul said: “Gala Durham has been a huge pillar of support throughout my creative journey, so I’m absolutely delighted to be bringing my debut narrative feature film to the venue.

“Filmed entirely in the North East with a talented local cast and crew, the film is a celebration of the incredible locations, creativity and filmmaking talent we have right here in our region.”
