A country pub which has stood empty after being damaged beyond repair is being demolished.

Durham County Council has begun work to clear the site of the former Chilton Country Pub and Hotel, which was previously damaged by fires.

The condition of the buildings has continued to deteriorate, due to vandalism and anti-social behaviour, leaving them beyond repair.

Using its powers under the Town and Country Planning Act, the council has taken action to bring about the demolition of the building.

The authority is funding the works through its Towns and Villages Vulnerable Buildings Project, which aims to support and enhance communities by bringing vacant units back into use through reuse, enforcement or, if necessary, demolition.

The scheme tracks vulnerable buildings in the county, focusing on the safety of these sites. It follows a six-stage process, working to first engage with owners and encourage bringing the buildings back into use before leading to enforcement action and the boarding up of properties when necessary.

Cllr Andrew Husband, Leader of Durham County Council, said: “Due to the extent of the damage, the site has been accessible to the public which has led to vandalism and anti-social behaviour. This has caused safety concerns for us, emergency services and residents. The condition of the site has also resulted in a long-term road closure, which is affecting public rights of way.

“We have been seeking ways to make the site secure without success. Therefore, in order to address the adverse impact the site is having on the local area, we have taken formal action to resolve the issue.

“By clearing the site, we will be able to open up opportunities for the site to be redeveloped for the benefit of the community.”

Council contractors will be on site over the coming weeks to complete the demolition works.
